Now that Spring is in full affect,  I wanted to take a look at one trend that has been making waves within the fashion industry.  Flower Power, also known as the ‘hippie movement’. This vintage inspired look has been around for centuries, which began in the middle ages/16th century with floral lace. According to ‘the swatch book’,  the floral lace trend was made to “elaborate edges of plain fabrics” basically to enhance it, make the fabric appear more prettier, elegant and tasteful on women and men. The most common lace  preferred by many women and men during the 16th century was Venetian Lace . You can read more about this in “A Lace Lover’s Diary”. There was also the Victorian Era, designers came up with the idea of a ‘sunflower’ floral print, which was often used for art, as well as wallpaper and even tiles.

Today they use it for almost everything. But mostly for women’s clothing and accessories such as Maxi dresses, leggings, skirts, blouses and handbags. It has become the hottest fashion staple among many famous celebrities including; boho style queen Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Beyonce, and Emma Roberts, even spotted at Coachella. Coachella is one of the biggest music festivals in California and is just around the corner! April to be exact. I wish I could go to see all the lovely celebs in their boho-inspired looks  but I’m currently broke and just graduated from college. So no Coachella for me! #CollegeGradproblems

I think the reason this trend works so well is because you can be elegant and sweet but yet sexy and sassy at the same time. It’s also vibrant, colorful and makes you stand out more. It’s sort of this Alice in Wonderland whimsical-y look, very animated and super fun! because everyone needs a little fun in their life right?! Especially if you’re depressed or maybe even  a little hungover from spending a night out with your girlfriends drinking at a bar downtown. Flower power will brighten your day up just by wearing this trend and making you feel calm, cool and collected. See what I did there? HA!

The worst thing you can do is wear an outfit that makes you look and feel bad, *cough cough* the old baggy jeans and sweatshirt look…I have to admit I’ve worn that look too many times, but now I pretty much hate it. I never wear it anymore unless I have a good reason to, I mean a REALLY GOOD reason. Like say, when it’s that time of the month? But in all seriousness….do me a favor will ya,  go out there and get the perfect spring flower power outfit with a smile on your face!

Now time for Brittany’s Daily Advice: When you are depressed or just “stuck in a rut” remind yourself that everything happens for a reason. That reason maybe something unplanned or a surprise. Who knows? But the most important thing is to get yourself out of that so-called bed ridden ice cream eating rut,and stay active, stay healthy and keep your mind on the prize. No matter what the circumstances are, you always have to stay positive, write little notes and attach them to your refrigerator door or bathroom mirror, stick them on there and look at them, repeat and breath, repeat and breath. Say those words until you get sick of saying them. You have to remind yourself of the good that’s out there, the good that surrounds you, your family, friends and loved ones. They keep you on your toes. Talk to them, call them, text them whatever it is. Do it for your own sanity and well-being. Surround yourself with positive role models, people who keep you from doing things that aren’t good for you or your body, or your life in general. People who uplift you, inspire you, make you happy. Surround yourself with them, because it’s going to get better and it will if you MAKE AN EFFORT to talk to people who do those things for you, who help you get better when you are sick, who go shopping with you for a new dress to wear to a party, who give you chocolates and tissues to wipe those tears from your eyes after you had broken up with your one true love, who brighten your day with one small gesture, that can make a difference. A small difference but a difference that will change how you feel. Believe in it. It’s everywhere.

In next month’s issue, Selena talks all about DBT  (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) which she swears by and has completely changed her life. She says, “I wish people would talk about therapy. We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.” AMEN Selena! #yougogirl 💜💜💜
